Guys, this is insane . And we’re still ramping up. Seems like jminer must have had to use his computers for actual work today , as NKato was closing the gap for a bit, but the big news is newcomer Deltazx1 , who exploded onto the scene and is sprinting to the top of the board. This guy is a maniac . 1.2 million points in only 7 WUs. This means the server is dishing BIG jobs to this guy and he’s clobbering them. Who is this guy? SHOW THYSELF!!

Serious business, people : look at the team ranking. In the course of today alone , we climbed from around 8,000 to now 5, 538. We keep this up and we’ll be one of the top folding teams. (Bear in mind that the Number One team has over one trillion points, so I’ll be smiling broadly when we break into the top 100...) We are in the top 2.2% of 250,000 teams. This is a cool thing.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

God damn, I’m sitting here thinking my 15-20k units are big ones. Really want to see what kind of specs are on that system.

I’m floored by how cool this all is. I’m going to upgrade my GPU and see what happens. Big points and small WU numbers are the computers with the sauce.

I spent a good deal of the day between meetings firing up spare machines for this express purpose.  It’s getting a bit nuts but I’m loving it!!!

No clue what our top folders have but I’m guessing there are a handful of 1080 ti cards or better in the mix, probably some RTX hardware if I was a betting man.

Just for reference my old crappy 780 ti is kicking out 50-75k per WU and completing those in about 3-5 hours.

A CPU just can’t hang with a mid to upper tier GPU unless is has 16+ threads and is no more than 2 years old. The parallelism on a GPU is king for this type of computing.

Yeah, I turned off my CPU compute for this since it took 3+ hours just to do 400-500 units while my GPU could do 10-15k in the same timeframe with ease.

I’m running mine on medium for the most part so my GPU is at 50% useage. I have to go in to the office tomorrow though so I’ll set it up to run full force all day and see how the 1070 does. I’m slightly ashamed to say this is the most stress my GPU has seen in some time though.

I saw that - there are several likely to overtake me in the next couple days and that’s awesome!

I do want seriously to thank you again for this.

This evening has been spent with both browsing ebay for GPUs at a bargain and contemplating other fairly cost effective ways of tossing some GPU resources at this.

I would watch out for Aheyworth as well. He seems to be moving up quickly, too, though he is using more machines to crunch WU’s.

Update: He just passed Delta.

Here is another good place to view the stats. I haven’t switched over from my other team yet, but I might for a few days to lend my 1,600,000 points per day to get the score up more.

DeltaZx1 is an animal. I can’t imagine how s he/ he is getting so many points with so few work units. My 1080ti is between 65k and 135k per work unit.

Distributed computing. Check out https://foldingathome.org

Computational science, finite element analysis, whatever. Modeling how pro t ei ns “fold” as they do their thing. The researchers have giant computational modeling problems and a server and an app. The server dishes out work to computers all over the world. The app runs and uses idle CPU and GPU capacity to do the calculations, then send back the results.

The top individual systems likely have at least dual graphics cards that are at least worth CAD$300 each

I was looking at new hardware with good bang for the buck that is also energy efficient.

And if I was buying something now, I think I’d get a system with a Ryzen 7 3700x (65w rating) and an NVidia GeForce RTX 2060 like this

https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_559&item_id=135901

Based on folding-related benchmarks, it’s a better performance deal than all the previous NVidia 16xx and 10xx cards

Though that card sucks back as much as 180w. If I wanted to avoid upgrading my power supply, I’d have to go one notch lower ... something like a GeForce 1660Ti

https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_559&item_id=135350

That card only sucks back around 120w and allow me to keep my current power supply and still be reliable under hard use

I can see it if they have a current system with an NVIDIA RTX 2080... or 2 or more of them running in tandem.

I learned this morning that once you hit 10 work units completed, your score gets a multiplier attached to it. I went from the score shown here, which took two days to get, to almost 200k after last night. I'll probably be at half a million before tomorrow.

The current mid-range tier of GPUs is pretty awesome both from a gaming perspective and from a computational perspective. I’ve got an RX 5700 in my rig and it’s an excellent 1440 gaming rig as well as puts down roughly 1 million PPD and I bought it new for less than $300 USD.

It’s pretty incredible. If I wasn’t staring furlough in the eyes, I’d be irresponsible and go pop for a new GPU.

Note that my pricing is in Canadian Funds. Take off about 25% and you have what I pay in US funds.

Generally the mid-tier is usually the best bang-for-the-buck and also doesn’t require an insane level of electricity.

Now having said that, I was looking up what the most efficient Folding@home rig would be.

From a perspective of most performance per watt, what you actually want is a system with a lower end efficient CPU and as many top-end graphics cards your motherboard/case/power supply can handle... preferably all of them being NVidia Titan RTX cards... which would cost my only around CAD$3500 each

https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_557_559&item_id=133259

But look at the performance particularly when it comes to deep learning:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-titan-rtx-deep-learning-gaming-tensor,5971-3.html

And another aspect of the RTX cards is NVLink

So if I was to build a single Folding@home monster system that gave me the most processing power per watt , it would be that relatively low power Ryzen 7 and two of those Titan RTX cards, and the necessary motherboard and 900-1000 watt power supply to support it all.

A rig like that would likely be around CAD$10,000 after tax.

If I were to spend that much on a system, I probably wouldn’t care about what the electricity is costing me... LOL.

In theory, according to this chart:

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/NVIDIA-NVLink-Bridge-Compatibility-Chart-1330/

Up to 4 Titan RTX cards can work in tandem. The only considerations would be finding a motherboard with the necessary slot, getting a suitable power supply (likely would need at least 1500 watts) and possibly messing with software/drivers to make it work properly.

But I have a feeling going to that extreme would be exponentially more costly and would provide a poor performance per dollar benefit.. aside from winning the “I have the biggest tech dick” award.
